At&T
AT&T will now automatically unlock most modern eligible Apple, Samsung, and Google devices over the air.
Requirements:
- The device must have been active on the AT&T network for at least 60 days.
- The device must be paid off in full (no remaining installment balances).
- The account must be in good standing (no past due balances) and the phone cannot be reported lost or stolen.
- Note on Prepaid: AT&T Prepaid devices require either 6 to 12 months of paid service before they can be unlocked, depending on your device.
- For most recent smartphones, no action is needed; they will automatically unlock once the above requirements are met.
- If it doesn’t automatically unlock, you can submit an unlock request online at att.com/deviceunlock. AT&T will respond via email or text within 48 hours.
Verizon
Take note of Verizon’s brand new unlock policy effective January 27, 2026. Their previous 60-day automatic unlock rule has changed.
Standard Monthly Plans:
- If purchased on or after January 27, 2026, Verizon locks the device until the finance agreement is paid in full. Once paid off, it unlocks automatically.
- If purchased before January 27, 2026, the device should have already unlocked automatically 60 days after purchase.
- Verizon Prepaid devices now require 365 days from the date of purchase and 12 months of paid active service before they can be unlocked.
- Postpaid phones unlock automatically upon full payment.
- For Prepaid phones, you must request an unlock after the 12-month period by calling Verizon’s Unlock Department at 1-888-442-5102 or by dialing *611.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile also updated its unlock policy in early 2026.
- Postpaid Requirements:

- For devices purchased on or after January 27, 2026, T-Mobile will automatically unlock your phone as soon as the full price of the device is paid (either bought outright at retail price or financing is fully paid off).
- For devices purchased before January 27, 2026, the device still needs to be active on the T-Mobile network for at least 40 days and paid in full.
- T-Mobile automatically and remotely unlocks eligible devices within 2 business days of meeting the criteria. You can verify the status in the My T-Mobile app or by going to your phone’s Settings.
Sprint
Sprint’s network and backend systems have been fully decommissioned and merged into T-Mobile.
